Throwback Thursday: The Nifty Fifties

Making a good use of the Throwback Thursday tradition—the only way I know how.

I've always had this undying fantasy of being a pin-up girl. Pin-up girls exude the kind of sexiness that's '100% real'. There were no cosmetic surgeries available yet, they simply relied on fashion and makeup. Speaking of makeup, that's what I love about the pin-up era. It was all about winged eyeliners and red lips. Smoky eyes were also popular back then. And don't forget about the hair! Ah, those big curls that scream retro and old Hollywood are oh-so fabulous. These things make me wish I was born in the early 50s.

One good example of the classic pin-up look.

What I meant about pin-up girls being '100% real' is the fact that they embrace their natural curves rather than being thin/skinny. They have voluptuous curves that men grovel for. According to examiner.com, a survey of 2,000 individuals aged 18 and over found that women with curvier bodies were more desirable. Now who doesn't agree with that?

Now let's go to pin-up fashion! Cropped tops, tights, sexy lingeries, swing dresses, high-waisted everything, all of these sprung from the 50s. Stripes, polka dots and lace were also the winning patterns in this era which are apparently making a comeback this year. Some of my modern pin-up fashion icons include Dita Von Teese, Amy Heidemann (from Karmin), and the late Amy Winehouse.

Dita Von Teese is all about class and sophistication.

Karmin's Amy Heidemann has the modern retro/pin-up vibe. Hers is more youthful compared to Dita Von Teese and Amy Winehouse.

Amy Winehouse's style is on the edgier side. Her exaggerated winged eyeliner and pin-up girl tatts make her the ultimate pin-up bad girl.

Notice what they have in common? Their signature winged eyeliner and red lips! Dita's glamorous old Hollywood curls, Amy Heidemann's suicide roll, and Amy Winehouse's trademark beehive. All of these create the perfect pin-up girl look.

My first of many Throwback Thursday fashion and beauty posts! I hope you had fun with this. 'Til next time!

XO,
Bea
